Bona is from the Latin bona ("good"). Bona Sforza (1494-1557) was the Milanese-born Queen of Poland and Grand Duchess of Lithuania — wife of Sigismund I the Old. She brought the Italian Renaissance to Poland along with skilled gardeners, architects, and cooks (introducing Italian vegetables — modern Polish włoszczyzna still means "Italian things").
