Hind (هند) is the Arabic word for "India" — but as a feminine name predates the geographic reference. Hind bint Utbah (d. c. 636) was the prominent Quraysh noblewoman who initially opposed Islam fiercely (her father, brother, and uncle were killed at Badr by Muslims) but later converted.
