Liliʻuokalani (Hawaiian, "the smarting of the royal one") — born Lydia Liliʻu Loloku Walania Wewehi Kamakaʻeha — was the last sovereign monarch of the Kingdom of Hawaii (1891-1893). Overthrown by American sugar planters backed by US Marines — protested the annexation and was placed under house arrest in Iolani Palace where she composed her famous song Aloha ʻOe and over 165 other songs.
