Lorraine is from the historical French province of Lorraine — itself from the medieval Latin Lotharingia, the kingdom of Lothair II established 855 CE. Lorraine Hansberry (1930-1965) — African American playwright whose A Raisin in the Sun (1959) — written when she was 28 — became the first play by a Black woman ever produced on Broadway and the first Broadway play directed by a Black director (Lloyd Richards). The play's title is from Langston Hughes's poem Harlem: "What happens to a dream deferred?". Died of pancreatic cancer at 34.
Lorraine does not currently appear in the US Social Security Administration's top 1,000 girls' names, so we don't publish a US rank or birth count for it. That says nothing about the name's standing elsewhere in the world — only that it sits outside the ranked US data we rely on.
In Pythagorean numerology the letters of Lorraine reduce to 2, The Peacemaker. This is a traditional interpretive system, not a factual claim about the name.
