Praskovya is the Russian form of the Greek Paraskeve (preparation; specifically Friday — the day of preparation for the Sabbath). Saint Paraskeva Pyatnitsa (Paraskeva of Iconium, 3rd century) — early Christian virgin-martyr; one of the most-venerated female saints in Eastern Orthodox Christianity; her name ("Friday" in Greek) caused her to become the patron of Friday — a major fast day in Eastern Orthodoxy; her cult is particularly strong in Russia, Bulgaria, Romania, and Greece; her relics are preserved at Iași in Romania; her feast day October 14 is one of the major Orthodox holidays.
