Subbulakshmi combines the Tamil-Sanskrit Subba (intelligent) and Lakshmi. M. S. Subbulakshmi (1916-2004) was the legendary Carnatic vocalist — the first musician to be awarded the Bharat Ratna (India's highest civilian honor, 1998). Her Suprabhatam recording is played at temples across South India every dawn — millions wake to her voice.
The greatest Carnatic singer of the 20th century.
Subbulakshmi does not currently appear in the US Social Security Administration's top 1,000 girls' names, so we don't publish a US rank or birth count for it. That says nothing about the name's standing elsewhere in the world — only that it sits outside the ranked US data we rely on.
In Pythagorean numerology the letters of Subbulakshmi reduce to 3, The Communicator. This is a traditional interpretive system, not a factual claim about the name.
