Toni is a diminutive of Antonia, from the Roman Antonius. Toni Morrison (1931-2019) was the American novelist who in 1993 became the first Black woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature — author of The Bluest Eye (1970), Sula, Song of Solomon, Beloved (1987 Pulitzer), Jazz, Paradise. Her Beloved — about a formerly enslaved woman haunted by her dead infant daughter — was named the best work of American fiction of the past 25 years by the New York Times Book Review in 2006. Recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom (2012).
Toni does not currently appear in the US Social Security Administration's top 1,000 girls' names, so we don't publish a US rank or birth count for it. That says nothing about the name's standing elsewhere in the world — only that it sits outside the ranked US data we rely on.
In Pythagorean numerology the letters of Toni reduce to 4, The Builder. This is a traditional interpretive system, not a factual claim about the name.
