Velu Nachiyar (1730-1796) was the Tamil queen of Sivaganga — the first Indian monarch to wage and win war against the British East India Company, in 1780, decades before the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857. After her husband's killing by the British, she trained an all-female regiment named Udaiyaal and is credited with deploying the world's first known suicide bombing through her commander Kuyili (who walked into the British powder magazine doused in ghee).
